Relaxed and Comfortable

And dreaming of scurrying, stinky, and mendacious rodents. Or so one must assume, upon viewing the cat version of REM (I mean the spasmodic quivering of the upper lip and whiskers, and the emitting of tiny helpless sleeptalky cries.)

Inconvenient as it certainly is to discover an animal sleeping soundly on top of the thing I was trying to read, at least it's understandable given that I stupidly left my papers on the nice, soft cushion. I can see what drives a cat to lie on paper on a couch. But the couch as preferred nap destination only lasted a few days, like every other destination before it. His current chosen place is perched on top of a hard cardboard box and he has to pick his way though a small forest of obstacles to reach it.

That was taken earlier today. He is asleep there right now. What is the common factor connecting all the places where a cat likes to lie down?

I have 3 cats and frequently get a fright when surprised by movement "oh! you're in the wardrobe sleeping on my shoes that's nice. sorry to disturb you.
or reaching into the linen press, 6 shelves stacked with blankets pillows etc and 'aargh! a cat in the coverlets'.
They can all get in the car by leaping from the side mirrors through open windows, and sometimes are difficult to move when I need to drive somewhere.
They are constantly amusing. Tonight they chased the dog round and round the house - I was in tears laughing.

In my house the rule of thumb with the two pusses seems to be if they're slightly hungry, they perch somewhere obvious and extremely inconvenient. If they're not, they perch somewhere less obvious but equally inconvenient. if they're REALLY hungry, they perch as close to your face as possible, like on the keyboard. I have one eyeballing me inches from the keyboard as I write this!

I think they go for texture and maximum intrusion ('look at moi, look at moi!'). Some cats I've known have had a particular fascination with A4 paper -- i.e. they like to sit neatly on an A4 page. Laptop cases are likewise appealing, presumably because of convenient cat-size.

The common factor is that they are on top of the thingy you want, and in a good spot to be admired.

Princess prissy paws particularly likes lying on my sills bend messenger bag if i am stupid enough to leave it on the bed, floor...anywhere horizontal. She also finds the warmest spots on a cold day. She has every chair, bed surface in the house except the kitchen bench. I am her humble servant, but I do draw the line somewhere.

He appears to be reading the cover of Cranford.

This one likes the laptop case too. It really interferes with the high-flyerness of the laptop case as an accessory if it's covered in embedded cat hairs.

I used to buy presents for the cat when on shopping marathons but really all he wants is a large castoff paper bag that he can get inside or squat on top of.

Yeah, cooking and eating surfaces are off limits. We have a Naughty Cat Spray (water) for transgressions.
