Win Stuff

Thanks to Tim Spalding, maker and owner of LibraryThing, I've got two lifetime memberships to this amazing online book cataloguer to give away. A lifetime membership would normally cost US$25 (and worth every penny) but you can get one for nothing! Just by entering an easy little contest or two!

I'm giving one away at Larvatus Prodeo and the other at The Valve. At LP the contest is "tell us about your favourite book" and at The Valve it's "tell us your best library story." Simple and (hopefully) fun. Go and enter.

Was it cheating that my selection at LP was one of Cavell's, and I know the judge likes Cavell? It was an honest choice, but maybe still cheating?

No, it wasn't at all. I liked that comment very much. It's asmost exactly how I feel about that book myself, in fact, it's been sitting on my coffee table for about four months, I never can bring myself to reshelve it, and I often pick it up and read a page or two.

It was the last of Cavell's big books that I came to; I found him through his film criticism. I haven't read Wittgenstein or studied philosophy as a discipline at all, so I sometimes feel like I've spent the last few years working backwards, if that makes any sense.

& I'm going to ask somebody independent to help me choose who to give the memberships to, heh.

So did you just forget all about this contest, or did you just tell the winner the prize and leave the rest of us hanging on the edge of our seats wondering?

Whoops, sorry! The winner at LP was Another Outspoken Female. She turned in a lovely evocative commetn that sent me looking on my shelves for the Helen Garner novel she nominated. I announced that in a separate, later post. Think I remembered to update the Valve comp in the comments thread there...
