no no no - revised

Andrew Davies is doing a masterclass on literary adaptation at the Melbourne Writers Festival.

This is something that would be incrediby useful and interesting for me.

But, I've already agreed to do a talk at the Jane Austen Society on that day.

I'm very, very disappointed.

VERY

(later....)

Well, I had the date of the JA Society talk wrong - it's the day before. So I actually can do both. I should have taken into account the ongoing problem I have with understanding which day of the week is which and so forth.

I was attempting to vent when I wrote this post. It clearly didn't work because I woke up at 4am this morning still incredibly vexed and lying there I decided to try to weasel my way out of doing the talk. Fortunately it occurred to me to double-check the dates before showing myself up as rude, selfish, and laughably disorganised.

*phew*

Or send a life-size cardboard cut-out and a tape recorder to the Austen people? (Come to think of it, have the Austen people ever actually seen you?

I know a lot of them. I did wonder whether it'd be too insulting to offer a videotaped talk.

You could do a version of the Pauline Hanson videotape. "Hello class. If you are watching this video, I am already dead/on sick leave.... " etc, etc.

LOL. I was about to suggest you come up with a substitute speaker, modestly claiming that s/he was much better than you. Or, failing that, that you make full confession, beg off, and offer to make it up to them by coming back and telling them all about what the Andrew Davies masterclass was like, like a Joseph Campbell hero venturing forth and then bringing treasure back to the people.

I can't wait to read your report of what Andrew Davies's workshop is like. I've seen him interviewed (e.g. in the special features to the BBC Middlemarch) and he's literally jumping out of his seat. Let's just say he seems...excessively...energetic. It must be a real power trip to make your 'take' on a great novel the dominant one.
