The GG lecture rocked! The girlchild absolutely loved Germs! Bumped in to Genevieve in the queue outside. And that last question from the Pamela Bone lookalike. I'm trying to find the time to blog that one.
Oh, and I can-not-ber-lieve that I have lived this long in Melbourne without seeing the Capitol. That venue would upstage any other lecturer.
Everything Helen said, she speaks for us both - and it was great to meet her girlchild too, and to share such an address with my own -vair vair interesting evening.
Hope you have a great last day and lovely dinner tonight, Laura. Well done.
Before going to the lecture I betook myself to the gentleman's bathroom. Shortly after washing my hands and going out to the seats in front of the theatre door, I looked up and saw Germaine emerging from the same gentleman's bathroom.
It gets better, as I had heard a woman jesting loudly with a gentleman in the separate cubicle. I had assumed that it was a paid-up audience member taking advantage of the men's bathroom (which was comparatively empty; the women's toilet had a large queue). Turns out it was Germaine.
When I had all this worked out, I started wondering if she did this at every lecture she went to - a kind of toilet tour of the world...
Laura, I wavered at the ticket-checkpoint when I saw you - and you were being detained by others unknown to me, so I let you be.
Apologies! I did point you out to daughter, though. That's a good story, TimT - we saw you too, but you didn't see us. Damn. GG must have learned that trick after giving many lectures to women, methinks. Not such a bad move.
Hi Laura - Saw you climbing up the aisle at one point, but didn't really think the waving - sticking - fingers - in mouth and whistling routine was er, desirable! We did however, give you a big silent thumbs up (and that was a very good question you asked at the end re. how we read Austen.)

We loved GG. Our favourite answer was the dating advice to her young students. Germaine counselling "silence - was priceless!
Wonder what Judith Lucy made of it?

GG's lecture was a blast, and the Austen Book Club movie wasn't so bad either. Would have gone to a few other events, to, but work gets in the way...
