Alas

Having received a solemn promise, from the Anzac Day badge-sellers manning the stall at the local shops last weekend, that the cannon at the local RSL would be let off at precisely 12.30 today, it was a bit of a letdown to hear it fired about ten minutes early as we were walking there. Arriving on the scene I smelled sulphur in the air and observed lots of excitingly charred knots of newspaper lying about on the ground. But no further cannon-shooting transpired. Ah well.

I guess deep down I knew they wouldn't be able to wait until 12.30.

At midnight on New Years Eve with lots of explosions going off I fired a shot into a neighbour's pine tree. It was dark of course, and about thirty metres range, but I'm sure I hit it.

(People "let off", cannons fire!)

Ripped off! How disappointment. But premature ejaculation is not uncommon in these cases, I guess.

These old people today, only thinking about themselves, it certainly wasn't like that in my day. *shakes head sadly, dunks biscuit in tea*

We spend a week at Port Fairy every summer and every year we miss the cannon firing at Battery Park... I don't know the significance of the firing. The place we stay is about 500 metres away from the cannon so we are always reading on the beach or having a cup of tea or something, hear the bang and say to each other "Yes, missed it again."

We really should have anticipated a pre-emptive strike, though.

That's a brilliant sign in the second picture. So clear, yet ambiguous.
