Irony

I'm sorry, I just couldn't let this pass unblogged. Even for a job ad this pushes a dangerously high number of buttons. Pedants, indignant embattled defenders of the language, proper library fetishists, and those who simply feel that the end of civilisation can't be all that far away, this one is for you.

Fixed Term (to 30 June 2007)
Salary Circa $58k + Super
Located within the Learning Service Division

The Learning Services Division at the State Library of Victoria is responsible for the Library's broad learning 'offer' and provides strategic focus in order to coordinate its programs for a diverse audience.

The role of Project Manger is responsible for leading the slv21 Online Learning Space project, involving a project team and managing and implementing all aspects of this project to achieve project outcomes within specified timeframes, within or below budget and to the satisfaction of project sponsor and relevant stakeholders while ensuring compliance with all legislative and regulatory requirements.

That Manger is going to be awfully busy Manging six Projects inside the space of one sentence.

Project Manger?

Jesus Christ.

I'll pay that.

And what about the irrelevant stakeholders, hmm? Who, pray, will speak for them?

to the satisfaction of project sponsor

Definite articles need not apply?

And your second sentence is so elegant and pointed that it makes it seem even worse than it already is.

Sounds like you'd have to wear stockings to do that job. I don't like those ones.

And people wonder why my year of job-hunting has led me to the doorstep of clinical depression. This is reason #45798.

BAZLOTTO!!

And yes, the ad was retarded, to say the least. I hope the person who wrote it earns a lot less than the Salary Circa $58k + super up for grabs.

The manager will not be busy. It is the role of the project manager that is responsible for all those projects. The manager doesn't have to do anything at all.

Pav's question about who will speak for the irrelevant stakeholders is answered. That honour goes to the manager who doesn't have to do anything at all.

"end of civilisation"? arma-bloody-geddin if you ask me. HR-speak. Vomitous. Thank god I'm not job hunting - kate has my complete sympathy,

Mine too. I completely feel her pain.

Unfortunately, that ad is emblematic of the whole managerial approach and culture of the SLV - I say this as a former employee who, due to some ill-defined 'change drivers' was 'forward planned' out of a job. Anyone who is thinking of applying, be warned!

Its the new breed of MBAs being released into the public sector. The intranet phone directory at my work is called the Identity Management System.
