Just for a change...

...my local primary school is holding "Education Week." Sounds like a blast.

I've been apocalyptically busy this week but I think (fingers crossed) things are about to return to their normal frenetic pace very shortly.

Given my lack of anything nontrivial to say right at the minute it seems appropriate to link to Jim Schembri's thoughtful and considered critique of the weblog phenomenon: Hey, bloggers! Blog on to my blogtastic blog!!! Thanks to Kate at Larvatus Prodeo for pointing the article out.

The whole Journalists vs. Bloggers caper is, frankly, stupid. The only sensible response to mainstream media trolling is to shrug your shoulders and go read something else.

But I confess I would really, really like to see somebody tear Mr Schembri a new one.

I take any random blogger's film review or recommendation thrown up by google in preference to Schembri's.

He is truely a waste of space in the Age. He's not even consistent or reliable enough to be a contrarian. Oh and it goes without saying he isn't funny.

Oh no Glen! It's not even topical boring mainstream media trolling!

Hey, remember when Danny Katz ridiculed newspaper columnists (including himself) and they fired him?

Not really, Mel. What would be the equivalent here? Bloggers all delinking JS from their blogrolls? Heh.

Glen, are you saying this exact piece was published in the SMH already, or that it's in the same vein as some mindless bit of blogbashing from last year? I can't find any trace of it haveing appeared before, though I did stop trying after about fifteen seconds, cos of TEH BOREDOM.

The article is petty. Resentful. And full of jealousy. I'm surprised that a name journalist would stoop that low. The Age publishes just a few letters a day from hundreds it receives, and even then editors select them to suit their slant on things. But blogs give all views a chance. And if it weren't for bloggers I'd be without access to people I've learned a hell of a lot from.

It's just snobbish and dishonest to portray all blogging as trivial. Yes, some bloggers will always struggle to express themselves to a standard that would suit a snob like Schembri, but others are first rate. Yours is one of them. And I'm just pleased that you take the time to do it.

Vintage Schembri. What a waste of space. Although I must admit that I read him because I love seeing all the different ways he can make himself look like a loser.

Anyone care to join me in a sweep on how many days until Schembri mentions in his column that he never figured out how to set the clock on his VCR?

I give him two weeks.

At last! I have won Baz Lotto! He's peering over a table! He's looking up at the camera! He's looking up at the camera! He's in a box! He's lying on his side, looking up at the camera!

It's all too exciting! Yes, I will use another exclamation mark!

I get to live bazlotto, Galaxy. (ThirdCat, that's Dorian with the tomatoes - pretty close.)

Uh, was the last commenter Chris T....or Christ?

I reckon it was the Big JC.
He would choose to read this blog if he was going to read any blog.
Schembri is clearly missing the point - or maybe he has deep resentment that bloggers are not subject to Editing by Other persons, like he is.
Yes Mel - I recall the Danny Katz kerfuffle: So many readers complained to the age that he was reinstated.
