Red Blob Friday

Wayne from Toolybird nominated the red blob-thing protruding from Melbourne Central for a bit of statue-post investigative journalism.

Well, I'm pretty sure it's not a statue, but what is it? A pomo magic mushroom? An artist's impression of your liver after dining in the food court at the top of the escalator? One of the sticky beanbags we had to sit upon in the "kids" cinema, also reached via this escalator, when we saw Hustle & Flow last Sunday?

Come on then, if you know what it is / is for / is all about, enlighten us.

I had sort of thought they were lips. Now that I look at them, I have no idea why I thought that.

A blob of sealing wax waiting for the Almighty's Stamp of Approval for Melbourne?

One day a huge child will appear above the city and lean over.. and...

just PRESS THE RED LEVER and...

... I have no idea..

but that for which we have been trained in our apparently accidental lives will happen.

It is a tongue. Have you ever looked under your tongue? Four red poles keep it in place, and that proves it. By the way it is above a place called Lix or Laps or Tonguey's or something, great gelati at non-great prices.

I would totally eat at a gelati place called Tonguey's. Or anywhere called Tonguey's, really.

Hey, today I had an idea for a shop that sold nothing but kittens. I wanted to call it Nothin' But Kittens, but my housemate preferred The Kitten Store. We were having this conversation because she referred to the local vet, which gives unwanted kittens a new home, as "the kitten shop".

i've heard it suggested that it is actually a hemorrhoid cushion for a giant.

although another theory is from someone who knows someone at ARM (the architects who did the reno) who worked on this project and apparently it is some first year graduate's stab at complexity and groovy blobby-ness all done very quickly and very late at night. which would put it squarely in the 'freak of design' category.

i hate to say it, but the crazed overtired graduate at ARM working late at night sounds entirely plausable.

I love how I can just throw out a random question like that and along come all these people with the answers.

Should exploit that opportunity much oftener.

I like Nothin' But Kittens. The local pets 'r' us is referred to here as the baby animals shop.
